Autumn Update

Running and Training in Autumn 2020

Different running routes, excellent training sessions, new run leaders, personal achievements, virtual races and even a physical one for a few lucky runners plus the (virtual) AGM all filled our autumn with highlights to keep us connected.

We met up in small groups, in pairs and on solo runs and shared our achievements and running adventures. What were your highlights?

Members have continued to share their achievements with us, and you can see a snapshot on Instagram, @bh_wrc.

Now with the new guidelines in place, we have changed our running routine, but we’re adapting and ready.

Twice-weekly HiiT sessions on Zoom are back and we’re making it as easy as possible for you to find a running buddy if you need one!

We’re here to support Brighton and Hove Women’s Club Runners – so get in touch with us if you have any questions!

The RISE 8K

The RISE 8K is a highlight in the running calendar for women across Brighton and Hove.

This year was no exception, and with so many Brighton and Hove Women’s Running Club (BHWRC) members signed up as volunteer marshals and runners to support the event, we were all looking forward to a wonderful celebration of running for a worthy cause with women in the running community.

When the race turned to a virtual event, we were disappointed that we weren’t all going to meet together for the first race in months, but BHWRC were not deterred.

Our Club Captain set up a fundraising page, raising £590 from generous members, family and friends.

Throughout the week when we could run the RISE 8K, run leaders organised small groups to join them on an 8K around Brighton and Hove, while other runners ran solo or inspired other people to join them.

We hope that next year we will be able to reunite with everyone on the start line in 2021, but there is no doubt 2020 will be a memorable RISE 8K.

Well done to all the runners of BHWRC for rising to the challenge, showing your commitment to complete the race, albeit virtually and enjoy the company of other runners to raise money for such an important charity.

We look forward to seeing everyone’s medals in the coming weeks – keep an eye on Instagram.

About RISE:

R.I.S.E stands for Refuge, Information, Support and Education.

RISE helps those affected by domestic abuse and works alongside survivors by giving practical support to help them rebuild safer lives. This can only be achieved through the money raised at its events, including the RISE 8K and Heroes Run.

Every year RISE supports over 1,800 women and their families to recover and reclaim their lives. RISE offers practical help ranging from direct advice, therapy and group support, to refuge space to those in urgent need.

Up and Running Through 2020

The Brighton and Hove Women’s Running Club (BHWRC) committee are an amazing group of leaders volunteering their time to run the club.

When they were elected last year it would have been impossible for them to anticipate what 2020 would bring their way.

Despite the challenges, small groups of runs are led all around Brighton and Hove each week by BHWRC.

Weekly HIIT classes, training sessions, trail runs and runs of all distances and paces offer plenty of variety for new runners and long-standing members alike to maintain fitness, meet new faces and improve their mental and physical well-being.

The organisation of the weekly rota is expertly put together by BHWRC volunteers with all the runs going live on a Sunday for the coming week. We are enjoying seeing new ladies join us to try out the club and new run leaders taking on new responsibilities.

We are grateful to all members who have offered to lead runs and sessions these past few months, as well as the committee for carefully following and relaying the guidelines from England Athletics to ensure we can meet safely and responsibly.

Some of our recent runs have been shared on Instagram – if they inspire you to join us, please get in touch! We hope to see you on a run soon!

#RunAndTalk

We’d like to invite men and women, existing and non-runners to join us for an easy, sociable run/walk and talk to support Time to Talk day on Thursday February 6th 2020.

The run/walk activity will be 30 minutes (15 minutes out and 15 minutes back) and as you can decide to run or walk at your own ability, everyone is welcome. The event hopes to improve mental wellbeing through running/walking and to break down the stigma associated with mental health by getting people to talk about it.

This activity is supported by our club’s volunteer Mental Health Champions and other club members. After the run, please do join us for a chat at The Sussex pub which is nearby.

For more information please contact: [email protected]

Or just turn up on the night!

Meet at the seafront entrance to the King Alfred car park at 7pm on Thursday 6th February 2020

Women’s Sport Week!

We are really proud to have been featured in this great article on the England Athletics’ website. It’s all about who we are and the activities we offer as a women’s running club!

Women’s Sport Week – Brighton and Hove Women’s Running Club

Clubmark Accreditation

Clubmark is a cross-sport quality accreditation for sports clubs operated by England Athletics.

Brighton & Hove Women’s Running Club has seen their membership increase considerably over the last couple of years and now provide numerous activities for a wide range of abilities and aspirations for over 150 members. Offering social running as well as training for participation in races from 5k events to ultra runs, the club is a hive of activity and friendliness. Organisation is key and the club epitomises this.

Being one of only a few clubs nationally, and the only club in Sussex with the adult running club accreditation of Clubmark, BHWRC has been setting the pace in their own way.

On completing the Clubmark journey, Clubmark Coordinator Carol Grant commented, “Going through the Clubmark process made us take a fresh look at everything we do, from looking after the safety and welfare of our members, through to providing a variety of training options and making sure we are as inclusive as possible. Getting the accreditation has been a huge accolade and everyone feels really proud to be meeting the RunTogether standards for an effective, well run club.”
