  • Mental Heath Ambassadors

    27/08/16

Brighton & Hove Womens Running Club are very pleased and proud to have Mental Health Ambassadors appointed by England Athletics at our Club.

These Ambassadors are committed to improving mental well being through running, our Ambassadors can be contacted through the club or directly:

    carol@brightonrunner.co.uk

    klj600@btinternet.com (Lisa)

    lucyjaneroughley@hotmail.co.uk

B&HWRC recognise that running has so many health benefits both mentally and physically including:

    • Reduced anxiety and happier moods through the release of endorphins
    • Reduced feelings of stress as your body is better able to control cortisol levels
    • Clearer thinking by breaking up racing thoughts
    • Greater sense of calm with space to think things over
    • Increased self-esteem and sense of achievement
    • Reduced risk of depression as evidenced by research studies

The objectives of Mental Health Ambassadors are to:

    • Support – Proactively support the mental wellbeing of club members and provide information about local services and organisations that can offer further dedicated support
    • Promote & Advocate – Share information about England Athletics #runandtalk and other related campaigns
    • Talk – Be available for conversations about mental health with other club members

The B&HWRC  Mental Health Ambassadors are there to provide positive, open and non-judgmental support.

World Mental Health Day, hosted by the World Federation of Mental Health, is on 10 October each year.

10 October is World Mental Health Day and England Athletics and Mind are asking as many clubs as possible to support their runandtalk initiative during that week. The aim is to organise a short run to promote how running supports good mental health and to break down the stigma about mental health by encouraging people to talk about it. These runs will be happening right across the country.
So the club is organising a 30 minute out and back run at 6.30pm on Wednesday 12 October, starting at the King Alfred Leisure Centre car park entrance (seafront side). It’s open to men and women, and runners and non runners. We will accommodate walking, jogging and running. Everyone is welcome. Afterwards we’ll have a drink and a chat at the nearby Better Half pub in Hove.

  • News Update

    20/06/16

2016 – has so far been very busy for our runners. Since January many of our ladies have run a great variety of road and trail races, ranging in length from 5k to 100 miles! We congratulate all of our members for their fantastic achievements, in Races, in Park Run, and when out and about running each week.

Not only have our ladies been busy racing, but they have also marshalled at events including the Brighton Half Marathon in February and the Brighton Marathon in April. The club also volunteered at the mile 24 Water Station for the Brighton Marathon, successfully organised by Lucy Dagg.

The crowds, the noise, the excitement, and the pressure not to let the club down drove me to a PB”!

23rd Maverick Trail races – Camille, Katherine , Alexandra. This race in the Cowdray estate in Midhurst comes highly recommended by Camille. “The scenery and route is great, and different from the south downs (forest, sandy soil, fields, hills are not too steep)

Carol, our previous Chair, has run several Saxon Shore events. She informs us that they are always friendly and supportive. These events offer the opportunity to try new distances as you can do as many laps as you like in a set time or as a full marathon. Carol also tried and enjoyed The South Downs Way Marathon, which was actually 28 miles in May. Organised by the Long Distance Walking Association, it was a very challenging event for both runners and walkers.

    Park Run

Park run continues to be very popular on Saturday mornings with ladies running in Preston Park, Hove Park, Bevendean and along Hove seafront.  This year we have seen several of our runners complete great milestones.

Congratulations to Lisa and Jane who passed their Coaching assessment on 19th June. They join Carol Grant as our club coaches.

    July 2016  Update

July was yet another busy, fun packed and exciting month for our Club! BHWRC has achieved a Clubmark, thanks to all of our members, the hard work of the committee, coaches and lirfs, and in particular Carol G for putting together all of the paperwork for the application. We are now accredited by England Athletics for our high standards of welfare, equity, coaching and management. Well done everyone!

Many of our members attended two enjoyable taster sessions for Pilates for Runners with Sarah Sawyer at the start of the month.

Our Beginners Course completed on 7th July with the ladies being presented with medals by Jane W and Lisa SW. Congratulations to all the ladies who completed this course. They ran their first 5k at Hove Park run on July 2nd or July 9th.  Please have a look at the Beginner’s Page for more on this, including inspirational testimonials!

Thursday 14th July saw our inaugural summer picnic organised by our great social secretaries. There were fun races competed in by 4 teams, a Bake off competition (the lemon meringue pie made by Alex W’s daughter won) and a tombola. Together these raised £112 for our charity RISE.

Throughout July our members have enjoyed running off-road in many different locations. We have certainly made the most of the longer evenings and fine weather. There have of course been some rainy runs too, but still great fun!

Well done to the following ladies for running these races:

1st July The Somme Centenary Challenge Run

    Sandra C and Carol K

    3rd July Bewl Water 15

    Camille M and Katherine P

    Joy D, Lucy R, Imogen W, Lisa SW, Naomi S, Alex W, Ann E

10th July North Downs Way Marathon

Jane W – during this very tough marathon Jane learnt a new phrase “pain is just a weakness leaving the body”! The marathon was very hilly and steep with a run down Box Hill at mile 9 and back up it at mile 18, with apparently 120 steps. Jane completed the course in “a respectable 5:39” and got a fab medal at the end.

    13th July Phoenix Brighton 10k

Sarah S who said that she finished in “a hot, tired and sweaty 54.10”! That was a hot week, well done Sarah!

17th July St Jean de Luz

    Deb W

    23rd July Lunar-tic Marathon, Shoreham

Leonie M, Jaye T, Tania P – a challenging marathon of three loops along the riverbanks of the Adur between Shoreham and Bramber, starting at 8pm. A beautiful sunset and changing colours of the river and surroundings, great support and two good aid stations made it very enjoyable.

24th July Henfield Seven Stiles 6K

Lucy R, Wendy M, Lisa SW, Carol F

    Park Run

BHWRC baked, bought and sold cakes at the Hove Park Run on 2nd July, raising £258.60 for RISE. Many of our members were there to marshal, help with the cake stall and run with the amazing ladies from our Beginners Course.

    Cheryl C ran her 50th on 16th

Laura T was a tourist at Abingdon and Carol C was a tourist at Stretford in Manchester.

Natalie M ran the London Marathon in April. Natalie has been working in London since and unable to join us on Thursday nights. We look forward to welcoming her back later in the year.

There have been many races entered during August, September, October and the beginning of November by our wonderful club members. It is great to see such a variation of locations, terrain, and mileage. Keep up the great work ladies!

    August

3rd WSFRL High Down Hike (3.7 miles)

    Lisa SW, Naomi S,

A friendly, well-organised and marshalled race. Views from Highdown Hill are far reaching down to the sea and along the coast. A hilly challenge on grassy tracks.

Anne S ran this hilly race on a very hot day!

A group of our ladies joined Lisa our Captain for an enjoyable weekend of being city tourists and runners! Lisa reports that “This was the 2nd year of our the club doing this run and it didn’t disappoint. The races consist of a choice of colour burst kids races, 5k, 10k, half and full marathon distances. The route takes in the old railway tunnels that have been opened up as a cycle path, lovely Bath countryside and then follows the tow path along the canal. Stunning!”

Rachel F, Lisa SW, Maggie W, Sarah RM, Naomi S, Laura T, Wendy M

18th Two Tunnels Marathon in Bath

Endurance Life Coastal Trail Series, North York Moors, 14.8 miles.

Naomi S who reports that this race in a national par has options for 10k, marathon and ultra. The race was well marked along the way. Tough terrain on a route that seemed to be mostly uphill! The route included running along a sandy beach where smugglers used to land, and splashing through rockpools, steep hills, woodland, sections along cliffs and cinder path, rolling farmland, the moors with sandy tracks, bracken, boggy paths and prickly bushes!  Beautiful scenery.
