2017 Events, Races & Runs

Update for March, April, May and June 2017

We have seen amazing running from our wonderful members over the last 4 months! A great variety of races have been run in a wide range of places. Here are the details of just some of the races entered and highlights of many of these, as well as significant Park Run achievements. Thank you ladies, we look forward to hearing about your races over the summer. Happy running everyone!

Park Run achievements.

Congratulations to…Wendy M for completing her 50th Hove Park parkrun on 6th May!

June 2017

4th – Worthing 10k – a fast flat course to help achieve 10k pb’s (Yippee!)

Lisa SW

4th London 10 Mile, Richmond Park

Liz M

16th The Go Girl 5k, Hove seafront

Kay K, who reported that it was “Such a lovely way to spend a summers evening. Great fun, well organised and would recommend”.

25th – Bates Green Gallop – 6 hour challenge – do as many loops (3.8 miles) as you want in the 6 hour time limit.

Lisa SW who reports that it had really friendly race directors and aid station marshals. A very well stocked aid station, serving hot and cold drinks and loads of homemade sweet and savoury food. Proper toilets! A huge medal at the end and the best cup of tea ever, as well as a recovery muffin to take home.

25th Bates Green Gallop at Arlington.

Naomi S, Jo reports that this race was laps of 3.6 miles (it was advertised as 3.84 but route had to be changed) and you could do as many laps as you liked in 6 hours. Very small, friendly event, lots of nice cakes and savoury bits, which could be eaten between laps, water and coffee/ tea. I would definitely recommend this one and you only need to complete 1 lap to qualify for a very lovely medal.

Dark Peak Trail Run (long route)
Naomi S – A tough challenging trail route of 15.6 miles in the Peak District.  Climbing up Lantern Pike and Chinley Churn, over Matley Moor, following the Pennine Bridleway and Sett Valley trail from the village of Hayfield in the Dark Peaks. Amazing scenery, running in rugged and remote wilderness. Organised by dark and white trail events.

May 2017

1st Burgess Hill 10K (part of Mid Sussex Marathon weekend)

Laura F, Maggie W, Naomi S, Katherine L who reports that most of this was off road and quite hilly in parts, but well organised and supported.

Maggie explains that If you did the three days you receive a medal for each event and at the third event you received a 4thmedal which joined all the previous three together making a very handsome commemoration of the weekend and a technical top.  You can do just 1 of the days or two you don’t have to do all three but it’s well worth trying to do all three, great fun especially as there were quite a few of us over the three days. Would definitively recommend this event.

7th – Portslade Hedgehoppers 5 – highly recommended WSFRL run.

Lisa SW, Wendy M, Naomi S who reports that this is a hilly run from Foredown Tower to Devils Dyke and back, well marshalled, fab atmosphere. I won a spot prize of a cantaloupe melon and another member won kiwis!

7th Wisborough Green 10km

Katherine L who reports that this is a lovely 10km run around the beautiful village of Wisborough. Very well supported and run. The locals where amazing with their support even down to making fresh homemade lemonade as opposed to water stops which were plentiful! Starts and stops at the village green, a definite for next year! My favourite so far!

The Adder 10 Mile Run in Friston Forest

Laura F who was 3rd lady, congratulations Laura!

14th – LDWA South Downs Marathon

Lisa SW who reports that this is great value at just £10 and includes a much needed hot meal on your return. This is an unmarked walk that runners are invited to join but with a start time an hour later. You get route instructions to follow and aid stations to help fuel you around the course. No medal but a printed certificate and an option to buy a cotton badge.

28th Weald Challenge Half Marathon

Caroline M

29th Vitality London 10,000

Wendy M

Superheros 10km Hove Prom

Katherine L – Sadly not very supported or published, but a nice run on a very warm day.

April 2017

1st – Fowlmead 50/ 12 hour challenge

Lisa SW who reports that this challenge was 25 x 2 mile loops around a cyclo-park in Kent. A well stocked aid station after each lap and a very weighty medal at the end. But, too flat and too hot!

9th Brighton Marathon 10k

Laura F, Jane P, Wendy M, Pauline Y, Katherine L, Jo C, who reports that it was a hot day so we were grateful for the early start and some shade at the level. Brilliant organisation and support as always, but you just can’t beat the huge support from BHWRC members to see you through the last mile! And I must mention Pauline, who stayed with me throughout and we crossed the finish line together.

Particular congratulations to Jane W who completed this 10k whilst in the middle of her chemotherapy treatment.

9th Brighton Marathon

Laura G

9th Paris Marathon

Maggie W, who reports that this race had something in the region of 35,000 runners from all over the World. It was such an amazing experience and I would do it again but I’d be hoping for temperatures to be lower than the 26 degrees were had for 2017 So hot, no wind. Beautiful route, with firemen showering the runners with water. The aid stations had salt tablets and raisins, which seemed odd but there were oranges and bananas too. Well supported but nothing like the support that turns out for Brighton and London, bands and music on the route and some odd dancers. The volunteers could’ve done with a Lucy Dagg Water Station training session …. not as well organised at the BHWRC water station for Brighton Marathon!

Bluebell 10 miles run, Angmering – a very friendly race that is recommended by many of our ladies.

Laura F, Carol S

29 April East Grinstead 10 miles (part of the Mid-Sussex marathon weekend)

Naomi S, Maggie W, who reports that it had a cracking route, really pretty, super organised beaut of a medal, handed out by the local mayor.  This started and finished at East Grinstead Rugby Club so the facilities were great, bacon butties and burgers burgers were available alongside tea and coffer and there bar was also open.  Plenty of Jaffa cakes and water at the finish.

30th Haywards Heath 10 miles (part of the Mid-Sussex marathon weekend)

Laura F, Naomi S, Wendy M, Maggie W who reports that the start was in Hayward Heath main street and was two laps including parkland, housing estate and an interesting stretch down an dual carriageway, not quite as pretty as East Grinstead but was very enjoyable nevertheless. Again well organised and again the mayor was handing out the medals. Plenty of Jaffa cakes and drinks at the finish

30th – 3 Forts Challenge – 27.2 miles.

Caroline, M, Lisa SW who reports “I keep returning to this one after my London rejections. It is a challenging course on our local hills, well marshalled by Rotary club volunteers and with plenty of aid stations”.

March 2017

12th Bath Marathon

Liz M

12th The Moyleman

Jo ran this with Carol G, Jo ran the first half marathon from Lewes to Southease and Carol ran the second half. Jo reports that It is the second time I have done this race and have thoroughly enjoyed it both times. Very well organised, beautiful scenery (rather hilly!) no medal but a glass engraved by Harvey’s Brewery, where the race finishes. Last year we got a burger at the end, this year it was a pizza.

Janet E reports that this is a stunning route on a circular from Lewes, lovely gathering of people . . .dogs, cattle, hills (over 3500 feet of ascent and descent) and a pint of Harveys and slice of pizza at the finish. The weather managed to be perfect on the day having been continuously abysmal over the months leading up to it! I was most appreciative of the stupendous support from club- members presence on the day and Lisa’s Monday -night training sessions

18th – New Forest Running Festival 1/2 marathon

LSW – Beautiful New Forest landscape with visits from friendly ponies. Medal and goody bag.

19th Hampton Court Palace Half Marathon

Caroline M

Mel’s Milers 10k

Laura F

Surrey Badger Half Marathon at Denbies
Naomi S – Beautiful hilly route in the North Downs starting and finishing at the Denbies vineyard
